Answering Service Versus Staffed Dispatch
An answering service can take your details. It cannot see courier positions, cannot commit to a pickup time, and cannot dispatch. It's a message queue with a human voice. Staffed dispatch means the person answering sees every active shipment, can reassign a courier immediately, and can commit before you hang up.
The Three-Question Test
- Who answers at 3 a.m. — dispatch or an answering service?
- Can that person see courier positions and dispatch on the call?
- If they can't resolve it, how long before someone senior is involved, and is that automatic or do I have to ask?
Why the Escalation Clock Matters Most
Most failures aren't caused by nobody answering. They're caused by the person who answered being unable to fix it and nobody above them knowing. An escalation that depends on you asking for a manager isn't an escalation.
Just Test It
Call your current provider at 2 a.m. and time the answer. It's the cheapest vendor audit you'll ever run.
